Currently I’m Associate Professor in the Industrial Design department of the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). In my research I focus on approaches how designers can design with and through data in the context of systems design. Hereby I work primarily on design tools, and layers between engineering matter and modern industrial design. Beyond this, I research new musical and visual expression, feedback and collaboration tools, and human values and sustainability issues in design.

Dive directly into my research activities. Before that I finished my PhD at the Department of Electrical Engineering (TU/e) in March 2011. And another couple of years earlier, I studied Computer Science at RWTH Aachen University and graduated in 2006. My CV is probably worth a look, too.

Since 2011 I’m active in Industrial Design education and loving it! I teach in the context of projects, courses, and workshops. Yes, some research happens there as well; I do write quite a lot of papers with my students.

Dr. Mathias Funk is currently Associate Professor in the Future Everyday group in the Department of Industrial Design at the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). He has a background in Computer Science and a PhD in Electrical Engineering (from Eindhoven University of Technology). His research interests include complex systems design, remote data collection, systems for musical expression, and design tools such as domain-specific languages and integrated development environments. In the past he has worked in research positions at ATR Japan, RWTH Aachen and he has been Visiting Researcher at Philips Consumer Lifestyle, The Netherlands. He is also the co-founder of UXsuite, a high-tech spin-off from Eindhoven University of Technology. [more]

In parallel to my research activities, I work at UXsuite, a Cologne-based high-tech spin-off from TU/e commercializing the software toolset/technology stack I developed during my PhD research. We provide new tools and approaches for collecting, analysing, learning and automatically acting upon data from the web, mobile devices and the Internet of Things.

Creative projects

Research and education in Industrial Design are one side of my occupations, check out the projects for more. Over the years I have worked on many different kinds of projects, from full systems, to small software projects, from art installations to music albums. The journey continues.
