I’m Associate Professor in the Industrial Design department of the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). I finished my PhD at the Department of Electrical Engineering (TU/e). And another couple of years earlier, I studied Computer Science at RWTH Aachen University and graduated in 2006. Coding Art book out now! 🥳
The second edition of our book “Coding Art: A Guide to Unlocking Your Creativity with the Processing Language and p5.js in Four Simple Steps” is out now. Published by Apress in December 2023. Find all about it on the Coding Art book website. The first edition of Coding Art was published in 2021 and the Japanese edition in 2023.
Research
In my research I focus on approaches how designers can design with and through data in the context of systems design. Hereby I work primarily on design tools, and layers between engineering matter and modern industrial design. Beyond this, I research new musical and visual expression, feedback and collaboration tools, and human values and sustainability issues in design.
Education
Since 2011 I’m active in Industrial Design education and loving it! Within the ID department, I teach courses on designing with various technologies and I supervise coach projects at all levels (Ba, Ma, PhD). From time to time, I also run workshops. Finally, education is very much connected to my research, from educational tools and learning analytics to design research projects with my students.

Dr. Mathias Funk is Associate Professor in the Future Everyday group in the Department of Industrial Design at the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). He has a background in Computer Science and a PhD in Electrical Engineering (from Eindhoven University of Technology). His research interests include methods and tools for designing with data, data-enabled design, Human-AI collaboration, and designing systems of smart things. In the past, he has researched at ATR (Japan), RWTH Aachen, Philips Consumer Lifestyle and Philips Experience Design, Canon Production Printing, Intel labs (Santa Clara), National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, and National Taiwan University. He has co-authored over 120 scientific publications and the book “Coding Art” with Apress/Springer. He is the co-founder of UXsuite, a high-tech spin-off from Eindhoven University of Technology.

In parallel to my research activities, I work on UXsuite, a high-tech spin-off from TU/e commercializing the software toolset/technology stack I developed during my PhD research. We provide new cloud-based tools and approaches for collecting, analysing, learning and automatically acting upon data from the web.
Creative projects
Research and education in Industrial Design are one side of my occupations, check out the projects for more. Over the years I have worked on many different kinds of projects, from industrial consultancy, to small software projects, from art installations to music albums. The journey continues.
